I am an incredibly lucky girl, and the other day for our 2 year anniversary D took me for a surprise meal to The Daffodil. Having never been there before, I’ve been desperate to try it for months (if not years), as it brings together 2 of my biggest passions, food and film. The place is a film lovers paradise.
We arrived early (which was surprising seeing as an hour previous I didn’t even know we were going out!) and went upstairs to the cocktail bar, having had our coats taken to the cloakroom at the door. The view from upstairs is amazing, they’ve kept most of the original features (including a projector) which gives you the feel of being in a 1920’s upmarket theatre. You can see where the bar would have been back in it’s prime, with the grand circle seats now tables looking out onto a stage. We were there on a Monday, which is Jazz night. Martini Cocktails are 2 for 1, so we both decided to try one – they were sharp and fruity, with plenty of alcohol! One of my favourite parts of the place is the menu – all of the sections are related to films. It has a beautiful sweeping staircase which leads down to the main restaurant. All in all the way it has been laid out, and the atmosphere has been created has been thoroughly thought out, and totally sets itself apart from any other restaurant in Cheltenham. The entertainment was great, and we had the perfect view from the balcony, it felt very grown up and romantic! When it came to food, we decided to go with a first. We shared a chateaubriand- something I’ve not tried before, but being a huge steak lover I knew it would be perfect. And of course it was, beautifully pink in the middle, seasoned to full flavour, and came with a lovely fresh salad, onion rings and 2 portions of chips. It was easily enough for 3 people, we were stuffed afterwards (but of course there’s always a little bit of room for a sweet treat).
Having eaten so much, we ordered some ice cream for dessert (chocolate, vanilla and honeycomb). This was a great way to finish off the meal. The Daffodil have got everything right, and not only did we love the food and drink, there were a couple of little surprises along the way. They knew that we were celebrating, and upon seating us at our table they brought over 2 glasses of bubbly, compliments from the restaurant. When we ordered pudding, we had an extra little bowl of vanilla ice cream, with an indoor firework! This had not been requested by D, it was simply the personal touch that you get from the wonderful, professional and friendly team there.
As expected, this place is faultless, and I cannot wait to return. It’s fairly pricey, around £40-£50 ph for a 3 course meal + drinks, but totally worth it for a special occasion. I would also recommend simply using their bar for a few drinks, really good value at 2 for 1 on a Monday, but a lovely atmosphere any day for a drink.
