12 Month Challenge – Diet 4 – Vegetarian

Now I always knew that this one was going to be a tricky one, but I was shocked at some of the reasons why. I am 100% carnivore, and never intend to be vegetarian again, but I have learnt to appreciate some of the lovely meals you can have whilst doing this.

I never thought I’d hear myself say this.. but I needed a break from cheese after it. Nearly half way through the year, can’t believe how quickly it’s going!

The Diet

Something I really don’t need to explain. This isn’t a diet, more of a lifestyle, which is exactly what I’m going for on these different months. It’s a nutritional journey and I’m really enjoying everything I’m learning. I went hardcore, people asked me whether I was going to be pescatarian, but for these diets I really want the true experience, so proper veggie it was for me.

What I liked…

It’s a simple diet. People have been vegetarian for hundreds of years, it’s nothing new. So no matter where you go, or what you do, you can find food on any menu that is vegetarian. The challenge is making it exciting, healthy and different. I enjoyed trying to find alternatives to meat, although I did eat a lot of cheese! Oops 🙂

What I didn’t like… 

It’s definitely not a healthier diet. Obviously lean meats are fantastic for dieting, so this was more of a trial of different foods. I ate a lot of cheese, and beans to take place of meats, and this made me feel bloated and made it hard to loose any weight. My weight stayed static during this month.

 

Good for you if…

You eat a lot of red meats and need to cut them out. It’s also good if you eat meat with every meal, because it’s a chance to think outside the box, and try new things. I will definitely have more vegetarian meals in the future.

Recommended Restaurants

As you will know, all restaurants cater for vegetarians. I wouldn’t recommend going to a steakhouse, but you’ll still find something! I loved Mexican, because the flavours mean that you don’t necessarily miss the meat. Italian is another great cuisine, you can’t go wrong with a pizza or pasta! I really enjoyed falafel – Greek, Turkish and Lebanese food lends itself well to vegetarian. Nando’s do some incredible vegetarian dishes, and I had the most dreamy avocado and halloumi open sandwich from The Ivy.

Hints and Tips

  • If you’re trying this and it’s not for moral reasons, be pescatarian. I really missed fish, which is odd because I don’t even eat much fish. It really is good for you.
  • Try not to eat too much cheese – beans, vegetables and fruit are great. There are better alternatives out there.
  • Linda McCartney sausages are genuinely quite good. I don’t understand why vegetarians try to replicate meat, but it worked well for me. I had them with mash and gravy and you could barely tell the difference.

I can honestly say, I will never in my life be vegetarian again. But I will try and have more veggie meals, as there are some really tasty options out there.
