Looking for a family friendly country pub for a Sunday Roast? Look no further than The Crown Inn at Church Enstone. Set in the beautiful Cotswold countryside in Chipping Norton, this place is a feast for the eyes, as well as a feast on the table. We headed there on a sunny Sunday afternoon, and it was bustling with guests. And having eaten their food, I can totally understand why!
Families, friends and couples were packed into the pub, awaiting their Sunday dinner. It was a lively, happy and chatty atmosphere. The kitchen were getting the food out in good time, and guests didn’t feel rushed, despite the fact there were queues for more tables. The conservatory-esque room at the back of the restaurant where we sat was lovely and bright, and at the front of the pub there is a cosy little bar. It has everything you could ask for in a local, or for somewhere to visit on a special occasion whilst visiting the area.
I don’t know if everyone feels the same way as me, but when visiting a pub on a Sunday, I have to have a roast dinner. Let me re-phrase that, I have to have a roast beef dinner. It’s my absolute favourite, with all the trimmings (the more roasties the better!). They serve up a small but perfectly formed menu, and we were excited to get stuck in.
I began with the most delicious (and colourful) beetroot ravioli with goats cheese – it was one of the tastiest starters I’ve ever tried, and I loved the fact that it wasn’t huge, so still left me wanting more. D had Duck rillettes with a cherry compote and charcoal biscuits, again, nice and light to leave us with space for the main event.
You know what comes next… roast beef sirloin with roast potatoes, veg, Yorkshire puddings and a delicious jus (or gravy, depending on what you prefer to call it!). Times two. Yep – we both went for the same thing, a rare occasion for us, except for when it comes to Sunday roast. The meat was smooth and tender, the roast potatoes were crispy and fluffy, the Yorkshire pudding was huge, and the veg were plentiful. It was exactly the dinner I was after, and if you go to the Crown Inn, I highly recommend getting this on your plate!
The thing I love about Sundays, is you can go for lunch at 2/3pm in the afternoon, and have a 2-3 course meal. And not feel guilty about it. Because the likelihood is that you’ll skip dinner, because you’ve eaten far too much food in the daytime. So of course we weren’t going to turn down the opportunity to try one of their delicious sounding homemade desserts.
This time, we ordered 2 of our favourites and shared – a sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice cream, and an apple & peach crumble with vanilla ice cream. Something these guys don’t hold back on is their portion sizes! The sticky toffee pudding is… sticky. It was so tasty, full of flavour and the ice cream added some savoury to the sweet taste, making it the perfect combination. The crumble, which I love served in a cast iron bowl, was fruity and delicious – the crumble was crisp and sweet, and the addition of peach to an already impeccable dessert, tipped it into the next level.
Despite the fact that they were rushed off their feet, we still received incredible service. The staff were friendly, and ensured that we consistently had everything which we needed. We did have to catch their attention a few times, but this was due to a particularly full restaurant, nothing I wouldn’t expect in a place like this. I was super impressed that you never saw any of them drop their positivity, it was always service with a smile.
Price & Rating
This place is extremely reasonable, for a 2-course Sunday lunch it’s £20, or £25 for 3-courses. And they are big courses. I would definitely go back and take family & friends for a treat.
